Wallpaper in a Humid Home: What to Check First
Wallpaper is one of the quickest ways to change a room, and it works well in Kerala homes when the wall and the paper are chosen with care.
Start with a Dry, Smooth Wall
Wallpaper needs a sound, dry, even surface. Damp patches, flaking putty or fresh plaster will show through or lift the paper. A newly plastered wall should be fully cured and primed before installation.
Pick the Right Type
- Vinyl-coated papers are wipeable and handle humidity well, which makes them a good choice for living rooms and bedrooms.
- Non-woven papers are breathable and easier to remove later.
- Customised prints are made to your exact wall size, so a mural lines up with your furniture and windows.
Where We Avoid It
We usually do not recommend wallpaper inside bathrooms, directly behind a kitchen hob, or on an external wall that gets rain seepage. A feature wall in the bedroom, a TV wall or a kids' room is where it shines.
Caring for It
Dust with a soft dry cloth and wipe marks gently with a damp sponge. Keep the room ventilated during the monsoon and the paper will look fresh for years.
